About Mitomycin® Injection

Rating of sales:

Mitomycin® Injection is produced by Zydus Oncosciences. Mitomycin® Injection is primarily used in palliative tumor therapy. The active ingredient comprised in medication is Mitomycin, a cancer chemotherapeutic agent (cancer-fighting drug) of Antineoplastics drug class, specifically of the group of Antineoplastics called Actinomycins.

- advanced metastatic gastric carcinoma;

- advanced and/or metastatic breast cancer;

- non-small cell bronchial carcinoma;

- advanced pancreatic carcinoma.

Mitomycin® Injection is also used in the treatment of anal, bladder, breast, cervical, colorectal, head and neck, and non-small cell lung cancer.

Mitomycin® Injection is used as mono-chemotherapy or in combined cytostatic chemotherapy in the aforementioned cases.

Mitomycin® Injection may be used intravesically for relapse prevention in superficial urinary bladder carcinoma after transurethral resection.

Mitomycin® Injection should be administered under the supervision of a qualified doctor.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Mitomycin is an antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces caespitose with a strong antitumor activity. It kills cancer cells by interfering with their genetical material (DNA), thus prevents their growth and reproduction. Destroying cancer cells, Mitomycin can interfere with some of the healthy cells, causing thereby a number of adverse effects. But it is still required to keep using the medication even if a patient feels unwell. Check always with a doctor as soon as any of the side effects occur.

Mitomycin® Injection is for intravenous (IV) administration.

A sterile dry mixture of Mitomycin® Injection should be reconstituted with sterile water for injection, providing a solution for IV administration.

Intravenous administration:

In cytostatic mono-chemotherapy: 10-20 mg/m2 of body surface every 6-8 weeks, 8-12 mg/m2 of body surface every 3-4 weeks or 5-10 mg/m2 of body surface every 1-6 weeks, depending on the therapeutic scheme used.

The maximum cumulative dose of Mitomycin is 60 mg/m2.

In combination therapy, the dosage is considerably lower.

Intravesical administration:

In intravesical therapy: 20-40 mg of Mitomycin in 20-40 ml of phosphate buffer pH 7.4 or sodium chloride (0.9%) solution, is infused weekly into the bladder. The treatment duration is 8 to 12 weeks. The urine pH should be more than pH 6.

In recurrent superficial bladder tumors: 4-10 mg (0.06-0.15 mg/kg of body weight) instilled into the bladder through a urethral catheter 1 or 3 times per week. The solution should be retained in the bladder for 1-2 hours.

In superficial bladder cancer (cancer on the surface of the bladder wall), Mitomycin® Injection is given directly into the bladder through a urinary catheter. The urinary catheter is inserted through the urethra. The Mitomycin solution is injected into the catheter, which is removed afterward. The medication should be left in for about 2 hours, after the patient empties the bladder (urinates).

The dose must be lowered in patients, who have previously experienced extensive previous cytostatic treatment, in case of myelosuppression or in elderly patients.

Mitomycin is a vesicant, a chemical causing extensive tissue damage and blistering if it gets off the vein. The nurse or doctor must be carefully trained while giving Mitomycin. If you notice redness or swelling at the IV site while giving/receiving Mitomycin injection, alert your health care professional immediately.

How to give intravenous (IV)

Material for injection: syringe with the drug (without air), needle (long and medium thickness; on syringe), liquid disinfectant, cotton wool, adhesive tape, tourniquet.

1. Wash your hands and expose the arm completely.

2. Apply tourniquet and look for a suitable vein.

3. Wait for the vein to swell.

4. Sanitize skin with an alcohol cotton wool (using liquid disinfectant).

5. Stabilize the vein by pulling the skin taut in the longitudinal direction of the vein. Do this with the hand you are not going to use for injecting.

6. Insert the needle at an angle of about 35 degrees.

7. Penetrate into the skin and push the needle slightly into the vein (3-5 mm).

8. Hold the syringe and needle firmly.

9. Aspirate. If blood appears hold the syringe steady, you are in the vein. If blood doesn't come, try again.

10. If you are in the vein, loosen tourniquet and inject very slowly.

12. Remove needle swiftly. Press sterile cotton wool onto the opening. Secure with adhesive tape.

13. Dispose of syringe safely; wash your hands.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose of Mitomycin® Injection to compensate the missed dose.
