Aziderm® Cream is a topical medication manufactured by Micro Labs. It is used as a treatment for inflammatory skin conditions including acne and rosacea. Additionally, Aziderm® Cream can be indicated off-label for melasma, non-resectable lentigo maligna, and cutaneous malignant melanoma. The active ingredient of this cream is Azelaic Acid, an organic compound of the dicarboxylic acids class.
Acne is a long-term skin condition characterized by clogged pores, comedones, pimples, whiteheads, and scarring on the face, neck, chest, and back. It develops when the human immune system responds to P. acnes bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) overproduction in the skin. Most frequently the abnormal growth of P. acnes is associated with genetic predisposition or increase in androgen hormones.
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease occurring as an immune reaction to the overgrowth of Anti-microbial peptides (AMPs), also called host defense peptides (HDPs), in the skin. AMPs may start proliferating due to blood vessel abnormalities, microscopic mites, and Helicobacter pylori bacteria among other reasons. Flushing, constant redness, bumps, swelling, and visible blood vessels are among rosacea symptoms.
Azelaic Acid has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, comedolytic, and exfoliating properties. It stops inflammation by inhibiting the synthesis of cellular protein and oxidoreductive enzymes necessary for disorder-causing bacteria growth. It also reduces the thickness of the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum) by normalizing the production of its key ingredient called keratin. With the reduction of keratin, pores become clean and free from dead cells residue.
