Description

Montymo® tablets are used for the treatment of asthma symptoms, including management of chronic asthma, preventing exacerbations of asthma, day-time and night-time symptoms, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and seasonal and perennial allergies. Montymo® is manufactured by Merck Sharp & Dohme and contains the active ingredient Montelukast, is a leukotriene receptor antagonist, that acts by preventing leukotriene-mediated inflammation in asthma and allergic rhinitis. The medication helps reduce swelling and mucous secretion and relieve symptoms like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath as well as nasal congestion, runny nose and sneezing in allergic rhinitis. Montymo® is not a rescue medication and is not useful in the treatment of acute asthma attacks.

Indications:

- maintenance treatment of asthma;

- prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB);

- seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Montymo® is composed of the active ingredient Montelukast that works by blocking the action of leukotrienes, chemicals released from the lungs, which mediate inflammation and are involved in the pathophysiology asthma, causing bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways), swelling and mucous secretion. Montelukast binds to the leukotriene receptors and blocks the action of leukotrienes in the airways, that helps reduce asthma symptoms including coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. Due to its anti-inflammatory activity, Montelukast inhibits the presence of proinflammatory cells in the airways and relieves the symptoms allergic rhinitis.

Dosage

Asthma:

- Adults (15 years of age and older): 10 mg once a day.

- Children (6 to 14 years of age): 5 mg once a day.

- Children (2 to 5 years of age): 4 mg once a day.

Montymo® should be taken once a day in the evening.

Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB):

- Adults (15 years of age and older): 10 mg once a day.

- Children (6 to 14 years of age): 5 mg once a day.

- Children (2 to 5 years of age): 4 mg once a day.

For prevention of EIB, Montymo® should be taken at least 2 hours before exercise. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.

Allergic Rhinitis:

- Adults (15 years of age and older): 10 mg once a day.

- Children (6 to 14 years of age): 5 mg once a day.

- Children (2 to 5 years of age): 4 mg once a day.

For allergic rhinitis, Montymo® should be taken once a day.

Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take only one Montymo® dose daily in the evening. Pediatric patients are advised to take chewable tablets or granules.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose of Montymo® you should take it as soon as you remember. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Do not exceed the doctor’s recommended dose.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are feeling unwell, you should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) and away from excess moisture and heat. Keep your tablets in the blister pack until it is time to take them. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children

The most common side effects associated with Montymo® are:

  • - severe tingling
  • - joint pain
  • - muscle cramps

Side effects occurrence does not only depend on the medication you are taking, but also on your overall health and other factors.

Contraindications

Do not take the medicine if you are allergic to Montelukast or any the other ingredients of Montymo®.

Do not take the Montymo® tablets during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without consulting your doctor.

Do not combine the medication with drugs which induce the CYP450 enzyme system (phenobarbital and rifampin), as they may decrease the effects of Montelukast.

Do not use the medication to treat an acute asthma attack, including Status Asthmaticus.

Do not use Montymo® if you suffer from severe kidney failure.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Montymo® tablets, as it may cause excessive drowsiness.

Do not use the drug if you have a phenylketonuria, as it contains phenylalanine.

Do not take the Montelukast tablets during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without consulting your doctor.

Do not give these tablets to children less than 2 years of age.
