Description
Aquazide® is manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries. The active ingredient comprised in these tablets is Hydrochlorothiazide, an antihypertensive diuretic of thiazide class.
Indications:
- edema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, corticosteroid and estrogen therapy, and various forms of renal dysfunction (nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure);
- management of hypertension (alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs of a different class). Aquazide® usually does not effect normal blood pressure.
Aquazide® also can be used as an alternative oral agent for management of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (do not confuse with diabetes mellitus or sugar diabetes), followed by abnormal production of urine (polyuria) and constant thirst (polydipsia).
MOA (mechanism of action):
Hydrochlorothiazide decreases elevated blood pressure by reducing the volume of blood. In particular, it acts on kidneys inhibiting the sodium and water reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule (kidney nephron). By this action, it promotes the urine formation, so excessive fluid leaves the body as urine instead of getting into the bloodstream. Hydrochlorothiazide also thought to relax the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, thereby lowering peripheral vascular resistance.

The exact dosage, as well as the course duration, must be determined by a doctor for each individual patient.
