Description
Xalatan® Eye Drops are manufactured by Pfizer. The active substance comprised in these drops is Latanoprost, which is a prostaglandin F2α analogue belonging to a drug class of prostaglandin agonists.
Indications:
- controlling intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with open-angle glaucoma;
- controlling ocular hypertension (high eye pressure).
Xalatan® Eye Drops are used, either alone or in combination with other medications to lower raised pressure within the eye.
MOA (mechanism of action):
Specifically, Latanoprost is a prostanoid selective FP receptor agonist that mimicks the action of a naturally-occuring prostaglandin (a chemical in the eye, that increases the drainage of the aqueous humour out of the eyeball). As Latanoprost is a synthetic prostaglandin, it acts on the same receptors in the eye as the natural prostaglandins. Therefore, Latanoprost causes an increase in the drainage of aqueous humour out of the eyeball and decreases the pressure within the eye.
Dosage
The recommended dose is 1 drop into the treated eye(s) once daily.
Onset of action is usually within 4 hours, and it lasts during a day.
Use Xalatan® every day at the same time, preferably in the evening, for as long as your doctor prescribes.
Using Xalatan® eye drops at the same time each day will have the best effect on your eye pressure.
Xalatan® aids in controlling your eye condition but does not cure it.
Precautions:
If you accidentally have put several drops into the eye, immediately rinse your eye with warm water.
If you think that you or anyone else may have swallowed Xalatan®, immediately contact healthcare provider.
Xalatan® eye drops may slowly cause darkening of the eye color, eyelid and eyelashes, and increased growth and thickness of eyelashes. Eye color changes are likely to be permanent.
Xalatan® Eye Drops should be used with caution in patients with a history of herpetic keratitis, and should be avoided in cases of active herpes simplex keratitis and in patients with a history of recurrent herpetic keratitis specifically associated with prostaglandin analogues.
The concomitant use of lLatanoprost and Bimatoprost or other prostaglandins may result in increased intraocular pressure (IOP).
Xalatan® contains preservative benzalkonium chloride which may be deposited in soft contact lenses. You can put your soft contact lenses back into your eyes 15 minutes after you have used Xalatan®.
If using other eye drops in addition to Xalatan®, wait at least 5 minutes before putting any other drops in your eye(s).
Xalatan® may cause your vision to blur temporarily after you have applied them into your eye. Do not drive or operate machinery until this has worn off.
Xalatan® Eye Drops are associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using Xalatan® immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.
Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.
Open a new bottle every 4 weeks.
Wash your hands before using the eye drops.
Missing a dose
If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.
